Alexandros Anesiadis [Crossover the Edge] – Intervista

Ho avuto l’immenso piacere di fare qualche domanda ad Alexandros Anesiadis, che, per chi non lo conoscesse, è l’autore di Crossover The Edge: Where Hardcore, Punk and Metal Collide, ottimo libro che tratta in maniera dettagliata la fase crossover degli anni ’80.

Ciao Alexandros. Come vanno le cose laggiù? Sei nel Regno Unito al momento, corretto?
Ciao Francesco! Le cose sono un po’ difficili in questo momento, suppongo per tutti noi. Il Covid e il lockdown continuo hanno reso la vita piuttosto limitata, ma speriamo tutti per il meglio. Sono una persona piuttosto ottimista e spero che l’umanità ne esca più forte e più saggia, si spera.
Al momento sono in Grecia, a Salonicco!

Il tuo libro “Crossover the Edge: Where Hardcore, Punk and Metal Collide” è una vasta raccolta di informazioni sul periodo del crossover. Oltre 500 pagine di tutto quello che c’è da sapere sull’argomento e sulle band. Quanto tempo ci è voluto per ottenere una così grande quantità di informazioni?
Grazie per le gentili parole! Bene…chiamiamola “esperienza di una vita”! Ho sempre tenuto file sulle band ogni volta che ho comprato un disco. Foto, documenti, qualsiasi cosa, ho sempre cercato di avere accesso al materiale delle band che amavo. Tuttavia, come procedura continua e quotidiana, mi ci è voluto circa un anno e mezzo.

A me è successo più volte che dopo aver concordato un’intervista con qualcuno, la persona scomparisse nel nulla. Lo trovo piuttosto frustrante e irrispettoso.
Tu hai intervistato molte persone nel libro, una per ogni band che vi trova posto. Come hai ottenuto tutte quelle interviste? Quanto è stato difficile raggiungere tutte quelle persone?
Prima di tutto, Ian Glasper mi ha aiutato a raggiungere alcune delle persone intervistate (ad es. COC). Tutti (tranne uno) sono stati più che gentili e disponibili ad accettare l’intervista. A volte era davvero difficile raggiungere alcune persone, perché non avendo alcun account sui social media, dovevo trovare e-mail o numero di telefono.
Forse la mia intervista preferita è stata quella con Karl Patton di Impulse Manslaughter. Mi ha inviato una lettera di risposta scritta a mano, inoltre è un vero tesoro. Oppure Felix Griffin, DRI, con cui abbiamo parlato per ore su Skype…ma in fondo, tutti!

Ci sono abbondanti opere enciclopediche su metal e punk, ma il tuo libro è probabilmente il primo specificamente dedicato a “where Hardcore, Punk and Metal Collide”. Perché hai scelto di approfondire proprio questo argomento?
Puro fandom è la risposta. Mi sono sempre chiesto perché non esistesse un libro del genere, perché la gente non abbia mai sentito parlare di band come Black Uniforms o Upset Noise o Fear Itself…Amo questo stile (specialmente le cose bellicose, non la versione annacquata del crossover), quindi questo è il motivo per cui ho scelto di portare avanti questo libro!

In diverse sezioni del tuo lavoro è abbastanza evidente il tuo “coinvolgimento emotivo”, specialmente quando ti riferisci ad alcune band o album che evidentemente ami. Consideri “Crossover The Edge” più il risultato della tua prospettiva personale o un lavoro enciclopedico?
Ah! Questa è un’ottima domanda! Ho già parecchie lotte interiori da combattere, e sicuramente questa è una di quelle! Bene, posso dire con certezza che è un mix di entrambe le cose. Ho cercato di offrire qualcosa di simile a un’enciclopedia del genere, con il tocco in più della mia prospettiva. Mi piace molto quando uno scrittore offre il suo punto di vista, la sua passione e il suo affetto su una band/disco. Ecco perché ho recensito ogni disco (presente sul disco – ndF). Potrebbe sembrare molto emozionale, ma in quale altro modo puoi trattare la colonna sonora della tua vita?

Hai vissuto in Italia, vero? Ti è piaciuta l’esperienza?
Già, a Siena, per due anni. Devo essere del tutto onesto, l’esperienza di Siena è stata piuttosto dura sia per me che per la mia famiglia. Siena è una cittadina molto conservatrice e siamo sempre stati trattati come “stranieri”, una parola che sentivo sempre rivolta a noi.
Tuttavia ho conosciuto a Siena alcune persone, come Eugenio (Degli Innocenti) e Damiano (Nutty Print), che sono state davvero cordiali, gentili e simpatiche.
Ma non si sa mai, c’è sempre una possibilità che mi trasferisca di nuovo in Italia con la mia famiglia.

Stai lavorando a nuovi libri, giusto? Di che cosa parlano? Ammesso che non sia un segreto, s’intende…
Sì! Sono al 95% del primo, intitolato “We Can Be The New Wind”, su Earth Island Publications. Questo riguarda un altro crossover (che amo con passione), la direzione melodica o alternative rock che le band hardcore punk, punk e neo-garage/power pop hanno preso degli anni ’80 in tutto il mondo. Questo è già ENORME! 160 band intervistate e recensite, più di 1.100 band da tutto il mondo sono presenti, e ho coperto una vasta gamma di band da The Plimsouls a 7 Seconds e da Kina a Les Thugs.

Il terzo libro è intitolato “Heroes of the Underground” e si concentra sulle autoproduzioni metal delle band degli anni ’80 che abbiano pubblicato almeno un LP o 7″ da sole. Questo uscirà sulla famosa Feral House Publications, e ho deciso di portarlo avanti per curiosità. Amo gli outsider (non solo le band, qualsiasi tipo), e queste band erano decisamente degli outsider. Inoltre, diversi di loro avevano collegamenti con la scena hardcore americana (come ad esempio Street Child o Kryst the Conqueror e Strange Flesh). Sono già al 25%, più di 170 band intervistate su un totale di 1000 band, quindi c’è già del materiale su quelle più note come Cirith Ungol e Heathen’s Rage a Gunner, Outrage e Diamond Claw.

Suoni/hai mai suonato in una band?
Ah no, purtroppo no, non ho nessun talento musicale. Se avessi mai avuto una band, questa suonerebbe come un misto tra i The Nils e i Wipers (quindi niente di grandioso!)

I had the huge pleasure to interview Alexandros Anesiadis, author of Crossover The Edge: Where Hardcore, Punk and Metal Collide, a great book about the crossover era in the 80s.

Hi Alexandros. How’s everything going out there? You’re in the UK at the moment, aren’t you?
Hello Francesco! Things are a bit rough at the moment-for all of us I suppose. Covid and continuous lockdown have made life pretty restricted, but we all hope for the best. I’m a pretty optimistic person and I hope that humanity will get out of it stronger and wiser hopefully.
At the moment I’m in Greece, Thessaloniki!

Your book “Crossover the Edge: Where Hardcore, Punk and Metal Collide” is a huge collection of information about the crossover era. Over 500 pages of everything there is to know about the topic and the bands. How long did it take to get such a great amount of info?
Thank you for your kind words! Well…let’s call it a ‘lifetime experience’! I was always keeping files of bands etc etc every time I bought a record. Photos, documents, anything, I always tried to have access to the material of bands I loved. However, as a continuous, daily procedure, it took me about one-and-a-half year.

It happened several times that after I arranged an interview with someone, he/she disappeared. I find it pretty frustrating and disrespectful.
You interview a lot of people in the book, one for each band that finds place in it. How did you get all those interviews? How hard was it to reach all those people?
First of all, Ian Glasper helped me reach some of the people interviewed (e.g. COC). Everybody (except one) were more than kind and helpful to offer me an interview. Sometimes it was really hard to reach some people, since they had no Social Media accounts, and I had to find emails or even telephone numbers.
Maybe my favorite interview might have been the one with Karl Patton of Impulse Manslaughter. He sent me a hand-written letter reply, plus he’s a true sweetheart. Or Felix Griffin, DRI, with whom we spoke on Skype for hours…but basically, everyone!

There are abundant encyclopedic works about metal and punk but your book is probably the first one specifically dedicated to “where Hardcore, Punk and Metal Collide”. Why did you choose to deepen precisely this topic?
Sheer fandom is the answer. I always wondered why there wasn’t such a book, why people haven’t heard about bands like Black Uniforms or Upset Noise or Fear Itself…I love this style (especially the belligerent stuff, not the watered-down version of crossover), so this is why I chose to pursue this book!

In several sections of your work it is pretty evident your “emotional involvement”, especially when you refer to some bands or albums that you evidently love.
Do you consider “Crossover The Edge” the result of your personal outlook or an encyclopedic work?
Ha! That’s a great question! I’ve already have more than many inner fights to struggle, and certainly this one’s one of them! Well, I can say for sure that it’s a mix of both. I tried to offer something like an encyclopedia of the genre, with the added touch of my perspective. I really love it when a writer offers his own point of view, his passion and fandom on a band/record. That’s why I reviewed every record in. It might sound very emotional, but how else can you treat the soundtrack of your life?

You stayed in Italy, right? How did you enjoy that experience?
Yeap, in Siena, for two years. I have to be completely honest, the experience of Siena was pretty rough for both me and my family. Siena is a very conservative little town, and we were always treated like ‘stranieri’-a word that I was used to hear all the time directed to us.
However, I met some people in Siena, like Eugenio (Degli Innocenti) and Damiano (Nutti Printi), that were really warm, kind and very nice.
But you never know, there’s always a chance of me moving again to Italy with my family.

You’re currently working on new books, aren’t you? What are these books about? Assuming this is not a secret, of course…
Yeap! I’m in the 95% of the first one named ‘We Can Be The New Wind’, on Earth Island Publications. This one’s in another crossover (that I love with a passion), the melodic or alternative rock direction that hardcore punk, punk and neo-garage/power pop bands took in the decade of 1980s all over the world. This one’s HUGE already! 160 bands interviewed-reviewed, more than 1.100 bands from all over the world are in, and I have covered a huge spectrum of bands from The Plimsouls to 7 Seconds and from Kina to Les Thugs.

The third book named ‘Heroes of the Underground’ focuses on the private metal releases of the 1980s-bands that released at least one LP or 7’’ on their own. This one will be out on the notorious Feral House Publications, and I decided to pursue it out of curiosity. I love outsiders (not just bands, any kind), and these bands were definitely outsiders. Plus, more than a few of them had connections with the US hardcore scene (like e.g. Street Child or Kryst the Conqueror and Strange Flesh). Do you/Have you ever played in a band?
Ah, no, sadly not, I sadly have none musical talent/skill. If I ever played with a band, this one would sound like a cross between The Nils and Wipers (albeit not THAT great!)
